Albumen Gallery is set to feature the works of four distinguished photographers – Robert Conrad, Steven Seidenberg, Thomas Kemnitz and Edmund Sumner – at this year’s Unseen Amsterdam photography fair, running from 19-22 September 2024.
The exhibition will delve into the theme of architectural photography, focusing particularly on the documentation and celebration of abandoned structures, which often serve as poignant symbols of urban decay and rural neglect.
Here’s a rundown of the featured photographers.
Robert Conrad
Robert Conrad’s photography, a striking commentary on the remnants of a bygone era, will be on public display for the first time since his passing in 2023.
Conrad, a Berlin-based artist for much of his life, captured dilapidated buildings as a form of protest against the erasure of history.
His work serves as a cultural preservation effort, highlighting the aesthetic and historical significance of these forgotten spaces.
Steven Seidenberg
American photographer Steven Seidenberg presents a haunting exploration of the Italian government’s 1952 land reform policy through his lens.
His work, which documents the abandoned post-war structures left behind in Basilicata and Puglia, reflects the desolate aftermath of a failed governmental programme that led to mass migration and the abandonment of rural settlements.
Thomas Kemnitz
Thomas Kemnitz’s meticulous approach to photographing abandoned architecture invites viewers to consider both the historical and geographical context of the sites he documents.
His images capture the moment a building ceased to be used, providing a visual narrative that honours the integrity and significance of these locations.
Edmund Sumner
Edmund Sumner, a renowned architectural photographer, will showcase his private artistic work alongside his commissioned pieces.
Sumner’s photography explores the enduring impact of human activity on landscapes, offering a timeless perspective on how architecture shapes – and is shaped by – its environment.
