PROS: Class-leading image stabilisation and great image quality
CONS: Not the cheapest option but offers something unique

What is the OM System 50-200mm f/2.8 IS Pro and who is it for?
OM System has made no secret of its ambition to dominate the outdoor photography space, and its latest professional zoom makes that intent unmistakably clear. The new M.Zuiko Digital ED 50-200mm f/2.8 IS Pro is not just an update to the brand’s highly regarded 40-150mm f/2.8 but a bold leap forward in terms of reach, speed and stabilisation.
With a constant f/2.8 aperture and an equivalent field of view of 100-400mm in full-frame terms, this is a serious telephoto for sports, wildlife and nature photography. At £2999 it’s a premium proposition, but it fills an important gap beneath the flagship 150-400mm f/4.5 IS Pro, offering a brighter maximum aperture in a more compact form.
What are the key features of the OM System 50-200mm f/2.8 IS Pro?
Weight and construction
Despite its impressive specification, the lens remains relatively portable. Measuring 225.8mm in length and weighing 1250g with its tripod ring attached, it’s substantial by Micro
Four Thirds standards but still smaller and lighter than most full-frame lenses. Construction is pro-level, with a tough metal barrel, smooth operation and full IP53 weather sealing for dust, rain and freezing conditions. Both zooming and focusing are internal so the barrel length never changes, which is a major benefit for tripod use.
Optical design
The optical formula is new, using 21 elements in 13 groups with a complex mix of ED, Super ED, HR and E-HR glass, plus an aspherical ED element to suppress chromatic aberrations and flare. OM System’s Zero Coating II reduces reflections, while the 77mm filter thread is protected by a deep lens hood that includes an access panel for variable ND or polarising filters.
Handling
Handling is carefully refined. The zoom ring needs less than a quarter-turn to cover the full focal range, while the electronic focus ring is precise and well damped. A focus limiter switch, AF/MF selector, stabiliser toggle and programmable focus preset button are all logically placed. Four customisable function switches and an L-Fn button surround the barrel, and the supplied Arca-Swiss tripod foot can be detached without removing the lens.
Stabilisation
Stabilisation is a standout feature. The 50-200mm f/2.8 IS Pro is the first in its class to include built-in optical IS, working in harmony with the latest OM-1 Mark II body to deliver up to seven stops of combined compensation. Even without in-body support, the optic offers five stops of correction, allowing handheld shooting at slower speeds than ever before.
Autofocus
Autofocus is fast, quiet and assured. The lens locks onto subjects confidently, tracking everything from birds to sports athletes smoothly across the frame. Continuous AF performance is excellent, aided by minimal focus breathing and whisper-quiet operation. Close-focus capability is another strength: the minimum distance is 78cm throughout the zoom range, producing a 0.25x magnification. Attach the MC-20 teleconverter and achieve a true 1:1 macro equivalent – perfect for detailed close-ups.
Image quality
Image quality is outstanding. Even at f/2.8 the lens is sharp across the frame, with crisp detail and fine contrast. Chromatic aberration is virtually absent and vignetting negligible. Stopping down yields a minor increase in sharpness, while bokeh is delightfully smooth thanks to a nine-blade circular diaphragm. Specular highlights stay rounded and, even against strong backlight, flare and ghosting are well controlled.
Conclusion
In the field, the 50-200mm f/2.8 IS Pro feels every inch a professional tool: fast, responsive and remarkably stable. It’s a lens that invites confidence, whether you’re tracking distant wildlife, freezing action or isolating a subject with shallow depth-of-field. The constant f/2.8 aperture ensures consistent exposure and allows faster shutter speeds in low light – a true advantage for dawn or dusk shooting.
While the price will put it firmly within the professional bracket, the blend of reach, speed, stabilisation and rugged construction makes it one of the most capable lenses found in the OM System line-up. For photographers who demand performance in every condition, this bright new telezoom could be the only long lens they ever need.

I have been using Olympus and OM System cameras and lenses in the motorsport industry for the past nine years, so when I was given the chance to test the new OM-1 Mark II and 50-200mm f/2.8 IS Pro lens, I was keen to see how they’d perform in the fast-paced, unpredictable environment of motocross. From the very first session, it was clear this pairing was built for speed.
Autofocus performance stood out immediately. The camera and lens worked together seamlessly to track subjects with amazing accuracy, maintaining sharp focus even as the bikes moved towards and away from me through corners. Whether I wanted to get a tight close-up or a wider, more scenic shot of the circuit, focus remained locked throughout.
Image quality was consistently good. The combination offered sharp, clean files with great balance that mixed harsh sunlight, deep shadows and rapidly changing exposure. The colour reproduction was natural yet vibrant, giving each frame a striking overall look straight-out-of-camera.
The set-up also felt familiar, making the transition effortless. The control layout and quick-access buttons provided immediate shortcuts to key functions, saving valuable time when lighting and track conditions changed. I could make adjustments instinctively, without diving into the full menu – a huge advantage in motorsport where
every second counts.
Ergonomically, the camera and lens felt superb. The body shape and textured grip made handling secure and comfortable, even during long shooting sessions at the two-day event. The design has clearly been engineered with the working photographer in mind – balanced, intuitive and durable enough to handle long hours trackside.
Overall, it was a very positive experience. The improvements over my current Olympus kit were easy to feel in practice, particularly in the autofocus and handling. The OM-1 Mark II and 50-200mm f/2.8 IS Pro are clearly designed for those who demand both precision and practicality.
