Sony releases FE 50mm F1.4 GM Lens

Posted on Feb 23, 2023

The FE 50mm F1.4 GM lens is ideal for still and video professionals working on portraits, landscapes, travel and wedding projects

Joining the acclaimed G-Master™ full-frame line-up, the FE 50mm F1.4 GM delivers captivating image quality and naturally rendered bokeh and makes the perfect partner for the latest Sony cameras. Spherical aberration control throughout the design and manufacturing stages contribute to well balanced bokeh, while the 11-blade circular aperture naturally renders bokeh throughout maximum aperture range. If you’re looking for your portrait subjects to stand out from their surroundings, this lens is for you.

Two XA (extreme aspherical) elements effectively correct field curvature and most types of aberration, while one ED glass element that supresses chromatic aberration for sharp images without colour bleeding. These combined design elements achieve a high-res image across the entire frame. Handily, Sony’s original Nano AR Coating II on the lens suppresses reflections even in a backlit scene. The lens also performs with flexibility when shooting close-up.

Versatile design

Containing the latest in advanced optical design technology, the lens packs in super-high performance in a 33% lighter frame than its counterparts. When paired with a Sony body, expect mobility and great low-light performance for portraits, weddings, landscapes and travel scenes, while being ideal for gimbal and drone operation.

Fast and reliable autofocus

When it comes to autofocus, the FE 50mm is a reliable companion. 1.9 times faster than conventional models, the focus group is driven by Sony’s high-thrust XD linear motors with an advanced control algorithm, giving smooth and responsive focus drive. Pair the lens with a Sony Alpha body and the lens quickly acquires focus and seamlessly tracks subjects.

When shooting movies, moving subjects are captured smoothly even at 120fps of higher. The ability to leave focusing to the camera when shooting solo or with a small team dramatically enhances efficiency and creative flexibility. The FE 50mm F1.4 reduces focus breathing and supports the breathing compensation function provided in compatible Sony Alpha cameras.

Intuitive operability

Engineered for maximum workflow efficiency while shooting, the Linear Response AF ensure the focus ring responds directly and repeatedly to subtle control in manual focus. The 50mm is also the first ever Sony prime lens to feature an iris lock switch and is fitted with the standard 67mm thread mount for filters.

Focus hold buttons and focus mode switches provide extra shooting versatility for content creators, located for easy switching between autofocus and manual focus on the fly.

The front lens features a fluorine coating that repels and allows for simple removal of fingerprints, dust, water, oil, etc. It can withstand rigorous outdoor use in challenging conditions, so is perfect if you’re shooting on location.

The new FE 50 MM F1.4 GM will be available in March 2023 at a variety of Sony’s authorised dealers, for an estimated retail price of £1,500 GBP / €1,700 EUROS.
