What a three months of camera testing I’ve had. Getting the chance to work with the latest cameras is a privilege, and the
Nikon Z 9, Canon EOS R3 and Sony A1 have recently been through my hands. This trio represent the pinnacle of contemporary camera tech and have received almost universally rave reviews – and deservedly so, they are sensational. Of course, they are very expensive, too. We’re in a lull of new cameras at the moment. This could be because the holiday season is around the corner, or it might be that makers have slowed down, because launching and generating interest in kit they can’t deliver enough of is self-defeating.
If you’re thinking of coming along to Photo 24 on 25-26 June, now’s the last chance, with applications closing on 17 May. If you can’t make it, we will be announcing themes for the Super 24 Challenge on Instagram and Twitter. We’ll have more details in PN100, our podcast and online.
Spring is a lovely time of year, and there’s much to look forward to. Autumn used to be my favourite season because of the kaleidoscope of wonderful colours, but I’m switching allegiance to summer. In lockdown last year, I grew to love photographing insects, specifically butterflies and dragonflies.
So, I’ll be treading photographic water, shooting landscape and urban until the insect season truly kicks off. With a couple of days out in London in the diary, I’m excited about my photography – and I hope you have similar plans, too.
Spring is in the air and it’s time to ramp up your shooting. With more hours of daylight and (slowly!) improving temperatures, March is great for photography. The sun is still low enough in the sky to give good light all day, the landscape is waking up and there’s a likelier chance of photogenic weather. So, make sure your lenses are cleaned, cards formatted and batteries charged up, ready to go at a moment’s notice. Get out there when you have the chance!
Welcome to a special issue and the announcement of the winners from the Photography News Awards 2021. It has been a bumper year for kit made even more impressive by the precarious situation the world found itself in the past two years. Thanks to everyone who voted in the awards – your effort and support is much appreciated, thank you.
Welcome to our first issue of 2022, a year we all hope will be better than the previous two. It’s only January, but there’s good news already, as the days are getting longer. The bad news is that it’s still rather nippy. Nevertheless, it’s a great time for scenic shooting if you wrap up warm. Frost, fog and snow can totally transform views you take for granted. Just make sure your kit is packed, lenses clean and batteries fully charged, so opportunities won’t pass you by.
Welcome to our bumper issue of Photography News, which is also our festive edition. Traditionally at this time of year, we like to treat family and friends – or ourselves. If you are struggling for ideas about what to spend your hard-earned cash on this Christmas, we have five pages of suggestions, from a host of brands in a wide range of prices.
Welcome to Photography News, issue 93. Autumn is here and it’s the perfect time to get out with the camera. Pretty colours, photogenic weather and low sun can combine for awesome shots – all you have to do is be there. So, the first tip for better photographs is do some planning, go online and download a few photo apps to get yourself moving.
Welcome to issue 92 of Photography News. The issue we turn the spotlight onto this year’s The Photography Show & The Video Show, the UK’s biggest imaging show. It’s on 18-22 September so you need to get moving if you want to go.
In issue 91, we’ve got our nature photography special. We catch up with professional wildlife photographer Margot Raggett about her Remembering Wildlife photobook series, offer up some top tips for capturing creatures close to home, and tie in a specialist buyer’s guide to boot.
Along with putting all the latest gear through its paces, editor Will Cheung takes the new Sigma fp L for a spin in this month’s big test. It’s compact and customisable, but how will it hold up to the PN microscope?
In issue 90, as Photography News closes in on triple figures, we bring you the people picture tips you need, no matter your preferred portrait style. Brian Lloyd Duckett also shares his advice for getting the most out of photography workshops.
Among a whole host of lens and accessory tests, the Panasonic Lumix GH5 Mark II is also on the bench. Never short on mirrorless innovation, it looks as though the brand has struck another pleasant chord, but just how good is it?
Midsummer Day is round the corner! Normality is still a work in progress, but there is every reason to be optimistic, and the weather is perfect for getting out and about with the camera. Of course, our horizons are limited in terms of exploring foreign lands, but we should thank our lucky stars we live where we do. We’re blessed with tremendous scenic diversity – and nothing is too far away. The staycation might not necessarily be your dream holiday, but in terms of picture taking, there’s huge potential, so enjoy it.
Welcome to issue 88 of Photography News.
Warmer weather, the longer days and, of course, the easing situation of the pandemic means that getting out with the camera is very much back on the agenda so let’s make the most of the summer photo opportunities.

On the technique front, we’re covering macro, with all the accessories you could ever need and how they could help you shoot some tiny wonders.
Welcome to the October edition of Photography News
Let’s face facts: new full-frame digital cameras will never be cheap, although they are getting more affordable as demonstrated by the launch of the Panasonic Lumix S5 and the subject of our big test featuring the Nikon Z 5, both bodies selling for under £2k. That, of course, is still a great deal of money and that’s before adding a lens or two.
Speaking of lenses, we have reviews of two exciting ones: the Tamron 28-200mm f/2.8-5.6 Di III RXD and Olympus’s latest telezoom, a 100-400mm f/5-6.3. The former is the first superzoom to sport an f/2.8 aperture, while the latter gives the equivalent of 200-800mm in full-frame, so ideally suited to nature and sport photography.
If outputting your photographs at home appeals, then the Epson SureColor SC-P700 could be for you. It can produce superb quality A3+ size prints – that’s 19x13in – in a great-looking unit that has a remarkably small footprint. Check out the first test in this issue for a full rundown of its features and stunning performance.
New cameras are making the news this month, with the announcements of the Olympus OM-D E-M10 Mark IV, Leica M10-R, Nikon Z 5 and Sony A7S III leading the headlines. Each has its own special appeal. The OM-D E-M10 Mark IV is a compact, creative machine; the M10-R is 40-megapixel, full-frame digital in the classic M mould; budget full-frame shooting is offered by the Z 5; and the A7S III looks to be an amazing still/video hybrid. So, despite the current pandemic, the manufacturers are working hard to keep the camera world moving, and well done to them all.
Our Big test this month focuses on the Fujifilm X-T200, an entry-level and richly featured mirrorless camera. Leading features include 24.2 megapixels of resolution, a sensitive AF system and a very lovely LCD monitor. If the idea of going mirrorless appeals, the X-T200 is an ideal starting point and it’s backed up by a complete lens system to cover every subject.
