Posted on Apr 19, 2024

The World Photography Organisation revealed the winners of the 2024 Sony World Photography Awards at a ceremony held on April 18 at Somerset House in London

This year’s event marked the 17th annual edition of the awards, which recognise outstanding achievements in the field of photography.

Photographer of the Year

French photographer Juliette Pavy was awarded the Photographer of the Year title, receiving a $25,000 USD cash prize along with Sony gear for her series, Spiralkampagnen: Forced Contraception and Unintended Sterilisation of Greenlandic Women. The series investigates the forced contraception imposed on Greenlandic women by Danish authorities in the 1960s and 1970s.

The awards ceremony also recognised winners in various categories:

  • Open Photographer of the Year: Liam Man from the United Kingdom for his photograph Moonrise Sprites over Storr, capturing a night-time blizzard at the Old Man of Storr on the Isle of Skye.
  • Student Photographer of the Year: Kayin Luys of Belgium for his series Don’t Trust Pretty Girls, which portrays his partner’s family in a personal narrative.
  • Youth Photographer of the Year: Daniel Murray, a 15-year-old from the United Kingdom, for his image of a surfer on a Cornish beach at the end of summer.
  • Sustainability Prize: Awarded to Kathleen Orlinsky of the United States for her series depicting the Gila Wilderness in New Mexico, focusing on local conservation efforts.

Winners of the Professional competition were recognised for their image series demonstrating narrative depth and technical skill. The competition covered a variety of themes including architecture, environment, and portraiture, with winners representing a broad spectrum of photographic practices.

The Outstanding Contribution to Photography was awarded to Sebastião Salgado for his influential body of work over more than five decades. Salgado’s photography, known for its rich black and white imagery, focuses on global human and environmental issues.

The Sony World Photography Awards 2024 exhibition at Somerset House, running from April 19 to May 6, features over 200 prints and additional digital displays from the winning and shortlisted entries.
