Historic Leicas to go under the hammer
To celebrate the Leica I's 100th anniversary, a host of rare and historically significant cameras will be auctioned

Rare and historic Leicas will be auctioned at the 46th Leitz Photographica Auction on 27 June in Wetzlar, Germany – the birthplace of Leica.
The star of the event is a Leica 0-Series No. 112, one of just a handful of prototype cameras that predate Leica’s revolutionary first production model. With only around a dozen of the original 25 believed to exist today, the camera carries an estimated value between €1.5 and €2 million. “These are some of the most sought-after collectors’ items in the photographic world,” said Alexander Sedlak, Managing Director of Leitz Photographica Auction.
Other highlights include a Leica I Mod. A Anastigmat from 1925 – thought to be the first Leica to reach the UK – estimated at €100,000 to €120,000 and a Leica M3 with the prestigious serial number 700,000, once owned by renowned sports photographer Prof. Stefan Kruckenhauser. That model is expected to fetch up to €600,000.
A standout among the 445 lots is a one-of-a-kind Leica MP camera engraved by British artist King Nerd (John Dowell). Featuring his signature design of the Leica headquarters at Leitz Park, this unique camera is the auction’s charity lot, with all proceeds benefiting the Austrian social initiative “Licht ins Dunkel.” It carries a valuation of €14,000 to €15,000.
While the sale includes many high-profile items, Sedlak emphasizes that there’s something for everyone: “There are also cameras, lenses and accessories expected to sell for three- and low four-figure sums.”
The auction will take place at 12 p.m. CEST at Leica World in Wetzlar and will be streamed live for global participation. Bidding is available online, in writing, by phone or in person – with prior registration required.
This auction marks the highlight of Leica’s centenary celebrations, which continue throughout the year with global exhibitions, cultural events and exclusive product releases. More details leica-camera.com.
