Sony introduces FE 16mm f1.8 G ultra-wide prime
Sony has announced the release of the FE 16mm f1.8 G, an ultra-wide-angle prime lens for full-frame E-mount cameras

Designed to offer a combination of high-resolution imaging and portability, the latest addition to the G Lens series is intended for both photography and videography applications.
Optical features and image quality
The Sony 16mm f/1.8 incorporates two Advanced Aspherical (AA) elements, one Super ED (Extra-low Dispersion) and three ED elements. An optimised lens coating is included to minimise ghosting and flare.
The lens features an 11-blade circular aperture and an f1.8 maximum aperture. Its close-focus capability allows a minimum focusing distance of 0.15m in autofocus and 0.13m in manual focus.
Size and weight
The lens measures 73.8mm x 75mm and weighs 304g, making it a compact option for wide-angle photography. The 67mm filter thread accommodates standard filters.
Autofocus
The lens is equipped with two XD (extreme dynamic) linear motors, while a control algorithm enhances responsiveness and reduces vibration, designed to benefit users capturing fast-moving subjects in stills or video.
Video
The lens incorporates technology to reduce focus breathing, aiming to maintain stable framing during focus transitions. It is also compatible with Sony’s breathing compensation function on select Alpha cameras. Additionally, in-body Active Mode stabilisation is supported to assist with handheld video capture.
Controls and build quality
The lens includes an aperture ring with a de-click option for silent adjustments, a focus hold button with customisable functions and a focus mode switch for switching between AF and MF. It is dust- and moisture-resistant, and features a fluorine-coated front element.
Availability and pricing
The Sony FE 16mm f1.8 G is expected to be available in April 2025, with an estimated price of £850. Find out more at the website.
