Leica launches first M-camera with electronic viewfinder
As Leica celebrates 100 years since the original Leica I, the new M EV1 represents a bold evolution of the legendary M-Camera as it axes the rangefinder

The Leica M EV1 is the first model in the legendary M-System to feature a built-in electronic viewfinder (EVF) instead of a rangefinder. The EV1 joins Leica’s family of digital and analogue rangefinders as a new option for photographers who prefer an electronic viewfinder experience. The 5.76MP EVF displays the image exactly as it will appear when captured, including focus, field of view and exposure. It’s a breakthrough for users working with ultra wide-angle, telephoto or macro lenses, and particularly beneficial for those using fast Summilux and Noctilux lenses at shallow depths of field.
The camera also introduces focus peaking, magnification zoom and real-time exposure preview, giving photographers accurate manual focus control in any lighting. Its intuitive design includes integrated dioptre adjustment and a customisable front lever for activating focus assist or digital zoom.
Built around the same 60-megapixel full-frame BSI-CMOS sensor as the M11, the M EV1 offers Triple Resolution Technology, allowing stills to be captured at 60, 36 or 18 megapixels in DNG or JPEG. The Maestro III processor ensures fast performance, while Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and Leica FOTOS App integration streamline image transfer and remote operation.
The M EV1 is handmade in Germany and features a distinctive diamond-pattern leatherette finish to set it apart from traditional rangefinder models. It also includes Content Credentials technology, adding a tamper-proof digital signature to verify image authenticity – a growing priority for professional creators.
Launching during Leica’s 100th anniversary year, the M EV1 is available now at £6840 – cheaper than the £7900 M11. An optional matching hand grip is £340.
