The flagship Noctilux series grows with Leica’s new 35mm f/1.2 ASPH

Leica has expanded its prestigious Noctilux line with the launch of the Noctilux-M 35 f/1.2 ASPH, marking the first time the legendary series has been offered in a 35mm focal length.

Since its introduction in 1966, the Noctilux name – derived from the Latin for “night” and “light” – has represented the pinnacle of Leica’s optical development. Previously limited to 50mm and 75mm designs, the new 35mm version brings the series’ signature speed and rendering to one of the most versatile focal lengths in photography.

With its f/1.2 maximum aperture, the lens delivers shallow depth of field and pronounced subject separation, producing a distinctive, cinematic look with velvety bokeh. Stopped down, it offers increased depth of field while maintaining high contrast and clarity. A floating element ensures consistent imaging performance from close focus to infinity.

For the first time in a Noctilux lens, close focusing extends down to 50cm when used with compatible live-view or electronic viewfinder systems, while rangefinder focusing remains available down to 70cm. The optical construction comprises ten elements in five groups, including three aspherical elements, and is optimised for high-resolution M-series sensors.

Handcrafted in Wetzlar using Precision Glass Moulding technology, the lens measures just 5cm in length, weighs 416g and features an integrated hood and is £7700/ $9,650. More info at Leica.com
