Meet the AI-turbocharged Sony A7 V

The fifth-generation Alpha 7 arrives with a brand-new sensor with AI-powered AF boosts plus faster continuous shooting and expanded 4K options

Sony has officially revealed the A7 V, the long-awaited fifth-generation model in its hugely successful full-frame mirrorless series. Featuring a newly developed 33-megapixel partially stacked Exmor RS CMOS sensor and the all-new BIONZ XR2 processor with integrated AI acceleration, the A7 V delivers a major leap in autofocus performance, shooting speed, colour accuracy and video capability.

Paired with today’s announcement of the new FE 28-70mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS II lens, Sony is positioning the A7 V as the definitive all-rounder for photographers, filmmakers and hybrid content creators.

AI-Driven Autofocus: Faster, Smarter, More Accurate

At the heart of the A7 V is Sony’s upgraded AI processing unit working inside the next-generation BIONZ XR2 engine. This enables a 30% increase in Real-time Recognition AF performance, allowing the camera to instantly identify and track subjects with exceptional precision – even in tricky lighting or rapidly changing scenes.

With 759 phase-detection points covering 94% of the frame and sensitivity down to EV -4.0, the camera locks onto subjects confidently across nearly the entire sensor.

Thanks to the faster partially stacked sensor now offering 4.5× faster readout, the A7 V can shoot blackout-free bursts up to 30 frames per second, complete with full AF/AE tracking and 14-bit RAW.

Sony also introduces Pre-Capture, allowing the camera to record up to one second before the shutter is pressed. For wildlife, sports and unpredictable moments, this dramatically increases the chance of catching the perfect frame.

Outstanding Still Quality: 16 Stops Dynamic Range

The A7 V delivers up to 16 stops of dynamic range, ensuring exceptional highlight and shadow detail. A new AI-based Auto White Balance system further improves colour consistency, using deep-learning scene analysis to maintain natural tones.

High-resolution RAW can now be processed through Imaging Edge Desktop, offering greater flexibility and fidelity for post-production professionals.

Advanced Video Performance: 7K → 4K 60p, 4K 120p

Hybrid shooters get a major upgrade with new oversampled and high-speed video modes:

  • 7K oversampled 4K 60p in full-frame mode
  • 4K 120p in Super 35mm / APS-C
  • Full pixel readout without binning
  • Advanced Dynamic Active Mode stabilisation
  • New AI-powered Auto Framing

Noise reduction and the improved internal mic deliver cleaner audio, while improved thermal design supports extended 4K recording without overheating.

Sony has redesigned the A7 V’s ergonomics and workflow features, adding:

  • 4-axis multi-angle touchscreen
  • Wi-Fi 6E for faster wireless transfer
  • Dual USB-C ports
  • Improved grip with deeper finger hold
  • New Monitor Low Bright mode for battery-saving
  • Upgraded heat management for longer video sessions
  • Battery life rated at approximately 630 shots using the EVF (CIPA)

New FE 28-70mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS II

Sony also launches the FE 28-70mm OSS II, a refreshed standard zoom designed to keep pace with the A7 V’s high-speed burst rate.

Key improvements include:

Up to 120fps AF/AE tracking when paired with compatible bodies

  • Coordinated optical + body stabilisation
  • Faster AF, reduced breathing and better zoom tracking
  • Lightweight and compact, it’s built as an ideal everyday partner for hybrid shooters.

The body is £2799 and E 28-70mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS II £429. Both products are manufactured using 100% renewable energy as part of Sony’s Road to Zero sustainability plan, with packaging made from Sony’s Original Blended Material.
