Student visionaries lead the way in AOP awards
The AOP Student Awards shine a spotlight on the next generation of photographic excellence

The Association of Photographers (AOP) has announced the winners of its 40th anniversary Student Awards, spotlighting the next generation of image-makers at a special event held at London’s Free Range graduate showcase. Running from 11–13 July at the Truman Brewery, the exhibition features captivating work from 51 finalists drawn from 28 UK photography courses.
Divided into three distinct categories – People, Places and Things – the awards attracted hundreds of entries that were judged blind by an expert panel. The standout winner this year was Ritchie Elder, a BA (Hons) student from Kingston University (taught at Edinburgh College), who claimed Best in Show and Gold in the People category for his striking portrait “Alaa,” part of a wider documentary series exploring faith across Edinburgh.
Joining him in the winners’ circle are John-Martin Bramham (Gold, Places), Ewelina Rhys (Gold, Things) and a host of other emerging photographers receiving Silver and Bronze accolades. Fujifilm UK is backing the awards with a £2500 kit prize for the overall winner and a studio subscription from Capture One, along with Elinchrom providing a pro lighting session to one recipient.
People category judge Alun Callender said: “It was a privilege to witness such variety, passion and emotional depth. I was searching for work that inspired and resonated—and Ritchie’s image did just that.”
AOP CEO Isabelle Doran praised this year’s exceptional talent, adding: “Students bring such refreshing, inquisitive energy. Celebrating 40 years of these awards has been nothing short of inspiring.”
The winners’ work will be featured in the official 40th AOP Photography Awards Book, published in time for the AOP Showcase event this October – another platform to champion the future of UK photography.
